The research presented is a perfect example of why academia is a circle jerk and often meanders in pointless researches such as this one. This presentation went in a circle and actually told us nothing. Grit is defined as ” courage and resolve; strength of character”. Grit is just the Talking Kitty Cat Shirt of resolve and self-discipline, and this presentation just took this manifestation as the cause of these students succeeding. That’s why the conclusion of the presentation was that nobody knows what causes grit; that’s because the researchers studied the result and not the cause.

I totally agree with her. Well, you know, to me, your brain – you can improve it if you work hard or study hard and then you can develop your brain. One day, your IQ will be developed and after that, you not only can get high Talking Kitty Cat Shirt levels but also you can get your proficiency in your attempt. There is other important factors that play a role, but I completely agree on the importance of grit for student’s success. I’ve put this to the test for my students, who all have this limitation in common: they couldn’t master a subject because they believed they weren’t smart enough. I showed them the exact video on growth mindset this ted talk is referring to, and had open/repetitive conversations about the power of a growth mindset, and the habits needed to be successful in anything, even areas in life they don’t enjoy.
I highly recommend the video course (from Stanford University, named How To Learn Math: For Students). It does mainly concern math but I’ve used the Talking Kitty Cat Shirt mindset section to apply it to any aspect of their life. I swear, those exact students now receive A’s and B’s in math (were previously C’s and D’s). They also are starting to challenge their fixed mindsets, slowly building confidence.
